Catching under-recovery early lets you back off before it becomes non-functional overreaching or overtraining syndrome (see overtraining-overreaching). No single sign is definitive — watch for several stacking up over time, relative to your own baseline:

Performance & physical:

  • Stalled or declining performance despite continued effort — the most telling sign.
  • Workouts feel disproportionately hard (elevated RPE for the same work).
  • Persistent fatigue that rest doesn't relieve; heavy, "dead" legs.
  • Lingering soreness beyond normal DOMS.
  • Elevated morning resting heart rate (often ~5+ bpm above norm) and/or suppressed HRV (see resting-heart-rate).

Psychological:

  • Mood disturbance — irritability, anxiety, low mood, apathy (often the earliest sign).
  • Low motivation to train; dread of sessions.
  • Poor concentration.

Sleep & health:

  • Sleep disturbance — trouble falling asleep, restless or unrefreshing sleep (see poor-sleep-and-training).
  • More frequent illness/infections (suppressed immunity) and increased injury.
  • Appetite or weight changes; in some, menstrual disturbance.

What to do: when several flags appear, reduce volume/intensity, add rest, or take a deload (see deload); shore up sleep, fuel, and stress; and recheck. Pushing through is what turns overreaching into overtraining. Logging these markers (see readiness-self-assessment, recovery-monitoring) makes the trend visible.
