Warm-up. A cardio session should start with several minutes (≈5–10 min) of low- intensity activity that gradually raises heart rate, breathing, muscle temperature, and blood flow, often followed by dynamic movements specific to the activity (see dynamic-warmup-overview and aerobic-warm-up). Benefits: it improves oxygen delivery and muscle pliability, primes the cardiovascular system so the transition to hard work is smoother, and reduces the risk of musculoskeletal injury and abnormal cardiac responses. A thorough warm-up is especially important before high-intensity work — HIIT, sprint intervals, and fast running — where going hard "cold" raises both injury and cardiac risk (see hiit, sit, running).

Cool-down. A session should end with a gradual taper — several minutes (≈5–10 min) of progressively easier activity — rather than stopping suddenly. The key physiological reason is blood pooling: during exercise the working muscles hold large volumes of blood, and the muscle "pump" helps return it to the heart. Stopping abruptly removes that pump while the vessels are still dilated, so blood can pool in the legs, drop venous return and blood pressure, and cause light-headedness or fainting. An active cool-down maintains venous return, helps clear metabolites, and eases the cardiovascular system back toward rest. A cool-down is itself a form of easy recovery cardio (see recovery-cardio).
