Spinal-extension exercise for the erector spinae (sacrospinalis).

Detail

Back extension is the exercise for the erector spinae (extension/hyperextension function of the lower back's superficial muscles — erector spinae). The erector spinae (sacrospinalis) consists of three groups (iliocostalis, longissimus, spinalis) and runs the length of the back from skull to sacrum — so it is incorrect to call it merely the "lower back muscle." Maintain proper spinal alignment (S-shape, never a C-shape). Performed on a lower-back bench, Glute Ham Developer, or machines (Cybex, Keiser, Life Circuit). It is the novice low-back selection.
