Alcohol (ethanol) provides 7 kcal per gram — nearly as energy-dense as fat — but it is "empty" energy with essentially no vitamins, minerals, protein, or essential fats. Because the body prioritizes metabolizing alcohol, fat oxidation is suppressed while drinking, and alcohol calories readily contribute to a positive energy balance (see caloric-balance).

For training, alcohol has several downsides: it blunts muscle protein synthesis and recovery when consumed in larger amounts post-exercise, impairs sleep quality (see sleep-architecture) even when it speeds sleep onset, acts as a diuretic that worsens dehydration (see hydration), and degrades next-day performance, coordination, and judgment.

Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2020–2025 advise that adults who do not drink should not start, and that those who do should limit intake to 2 drinks or less per day for men and 1 drink or less per day for women, on days when alcohol is consumed. The guidelines emphasize that drinking less is better for health than drinking more. A "standard drink" in the US is about 14 g of pure alcohol — roughly 12 oz of regular beer (~5%), 5 oz of wine (~12%), or 1.5 oz of distilled spirits (~40%).
