Periodization organizes time into three nested cycles, from longest to shortest:

  • Macrocycle — the entire training plan toward a major goal or event, typically several months to a year (sometimes multi-year for athletes). It contains all the mesocycles in sequence and usually ends in a peak/competition or a re-test.
  • Mesocycle — a block of weeks (commonly 3–6 weeks, often ~4) with a single dominant emphasis (e.g., a hypertrophy block, a strength block, a peaking block). Most mesocycles follow a loading pattern that accumulates fatigue and then end in a lighter deload week to dissipate it.
  • Microcycle — the shortest functional unit, usually one week (the repeating pattern of training and rest days). A microcycle specifies which sessions, in what order, at what relative load, fall on which days.

These map onto the model menu: a linear plan strings mesocycles of falling volume / rising intensity across the macrocycle; a block plan makes each mesocycle a concentrated block of one quality; an undulating plan varies the stimulus within the microcycle. A common construction is a mesocycle of 3 progressively harder microcycles followed by 1 deload microcycle (a 3:1 loading pattern), repeated and reshaped across the macrocycle, finishing with a taper.

Thinking in nested cycles keeps two horizons in view at once: the week (microcycle) you are executing, and the months (macro/meso) that give it direction.
