Detail

A plateau is progress stopping for several weeks despite correct training. The instinct to "just do more" is usually wrong; most plateaus are recovery, technique, or stimulus-staleness problems, not under-work problems. Work the ladder in order:

  1. Check the inputs first. Is the trainee actually progressively overloading, eating and sleeping adequately, and adhering? Many "plateaus" are an undereating (see caloric-balance), poor sleep/recovery, or missed-sessions problem in disguise.
  2. Deload. If fatigue signs are present (rising RPE, soreness, stalled lifts), a deload week often unmasks fitness that fatigue was hiding — supercompensation resumes progress without any program change.
  3. Apply progressive overload differently. If load has stalled, switch the lever: add reps or sets instead of load, microload, or use double progression. You may be near your maximum recoverable volume — adding volume then makes it worse, and trimming to maintenance can restore progress.
  4. Introduce variation. Per variation, a stale stimulus stops adapting; rotate exercises, change rep ranges, or move to a different periodization model. Advanced lifters need this most.
  5. Re-assess the program fit. If none of the above works, the program may no longer match the goal or training age — return to monitoring-and-adjustment and redesign.

The key error to avoid: piling on volume to break a plateau caused by under-recovery, which deepens the hole. Distinguish a true plateau (weeks of no progress with good inputs) from normal week-to-week noise.
