Selection is step 4 of the design process and the practical expression of specificity. The base variable is exercise-selection and the compound/isolation taxonomy is exercise-categories; this is the decision strategy.

Selection priorities, in order:

  1. Match the goal's movement patterns. From the needs analysis, cover the fundamental patterns the goal demands — typically squat, hinge, horizontal/vertical push, horizontal/vertical pull, lunge/single-leg, carry/core (see movement-pattern-balance).
  2. Lead with compound, multi-joint lifts. They train the most muscle, allow the heaviest loads, and give the biggest stimulus per exercise; isolation work supplements them for lagging muscles or specific aesthetics.
  3. Balance opposing patterns. Pair pushes with pulls and knee-dominant with hip-dominant work to preserve muscle balance and joint health; don't over-select the "mirror" muscles.
  4. Fit equipment and skill. Choose variations the person can do safely with available equipment and current technique — a goblet squat before a back squat for a novice; dumbbells when no barbell.
  5. Manage exercise count. Enough exercises to cover the patterns and volume, few enough to recover from and execute well — quality over a sprawling list.

The chosen exercises are then sequenced by session-exercise-order and dosed by the acute variables. Selection should also leave room for variation over time (rotating variations) without abandoning the core lifts that carry progression.
