Exercise order decides which lifts get your freshest, least-fatigued effort. The base variable is exercise-order and the principle is arrangement-of-exercises; this is the practical ordering rule.

Default priority order (most → least neurally demanding):

  1. Power / explosive — Olympic-lift derivatives, jumps, throws, plyometrics. Highest skill and CNS demand; must be done fresh (see power-integration-with-strength).
  2. Heavy multi-joint (compound) lifts — squat, deadlift, bench, row, overhead press. The primary strength drivers; fatigue here is costly.
  3. Assistance multi-joint — lunges, dips, pulldowns, secondary compounds.
  4. Single-joint (isolation) — curls, extensions, raises, calf work.
  5. Core / trunk — generally last, so trunk fatigue doesn't compromise earlier heavy bracing.

The reasons: the most complex, highest-force, most injury-sensitive work needs the least pre-fatigue and the best technique; large-muscle compounds also allow heavier loads and a bigger systemic stimulus early. Order also follows the priority/specificity rule — whatever the session most wants to improve goes earliest (e.g., a weak-point lift moved up).

Deliberate exceptions / techniques: pre-exhaustion intentionally fatigues a muscle with an isolation move before a compound; supersets and circuits alternate to save time or push density; in a concurrent session the priority quality (often strength) precedes endurance to limit interference. The warm-up always precedes the work and the cool-down follows it (see warm-up-cool-down-structure).
