The overhead medicine-ball throw is a ballistic, total-body drill thrown either forward overhead (soccer-style, for distance ahead) or, very commonly, backward overhead (over the head behind the body). The backward variant in particular sequences a full triple extension of ankles-knees-hips with a vigorous trunk and shoulder action, producing high power through the posterior chain — closely related to the explosive extension in jumping and Olympic-lift derivatives.

Technique (backward overhead): hold the ball low between the legs in a hinge/quarter-squat, then explosively extend the hips and knees while swinging the ball up and back overhead, releasing it behind for distance; let the body follow through. Avoid excessive lumbar hyperextension at release — extension should come mostly from the hips, not the low back. The forward overhead throw drives the ball forward-and-down from overhead using lats and trunk flexion.

Light-to-moderate ball, maximal velocity, low reps, full reset; needs clear space or a wall/partner. Throw distance can be used as a total-body power test.
