Alcohol is socially normalized but interferes with most fitness aims, especially around training and recovery:

  • Sleep: alcohol speeds sleep onset but fragments sleep, suppresses REM, and worsens second-half sleep quality — so you sleep worse, undermining recovery (see sleep-architecture, sleep-hygiene).
  • Muscle protein synthesis: post-exercise alcohol intake has been shown to blunt muscle protein synthesis even when protein is consumed, impairing the adaptive response to training (see sleep-and-muscle-growth). Verified 2026-08-27: Parr et al. (2014) had 8 physically active men do resistance + interval cycling, then consume either whey protein alone, alcohol co-ingested with protein, or alcohol with carbohydrate. Versus protein alone, myofibrillar protein synthesis was 24% lower with alcohol+protein and 37% lower with alcohol+carbohydrate. Caveat worth carrying into any product content: the alcohol dose used was high (1.5 g/kg body mass, ~12±2 standard drinks) — this demonstrates the effect exists and its rough scale at a heavy dose, not what a single drink does.
  • Hormones: acute heavy drinking can lower testosterone and disturb the hormonal recovery environment.
