How to do the Zercher Squat

Cues reviewed by Kwabena Osei on

Setup

Cradle the bar in the crooks of your elbows, held against your torso, feet shoulder-width.

  1. Squat down by bending your hips and knees, keeping your torso as upright as possible -- the front-loaded bar position naturally demands a more vertical torso than a back squat.

  2. Keep your elbows up and the bar pulled in tight to your body throughout the descent.

  3. Drive back up to standing.

Common mistakes

  • Letting the bar roll away from your body, which increases strain on your elbows and forearms and pulls you forward.

  • Rounding the upper back to compensate for the front-loaded position instead of keeping your chest up and torso as vertical as the load allows.
