Detail

Goniometry is the direct measurement of joint range of motion (ROM) in degrees using a goniometer (a protractor with two arms). It is the precise, clinical alternative to gross flexibility field tests, isolating a single joint and motion (e.g., knee flexion, shoulder abduction, hip extension).

Technique: align the goniometer's fulcrum over the joint axis, the stationary arm along the proximal segment, and the moving arm along the distal segment; record the angle at the start and end of the available motion (active or passive). Inclinometers and smartphone apps offer alternatives, often with comparable reliability for many joints. Reliability is best when the same tester, landmarks, and active/passive condition are repeated.

Use: compare to normal ROM reference values (see joint-range-of-motion-chart) to identify limitations or asymmetries, set rehab/mobility goals, and track change. It is more sensitive and specific than sit-and-reach for a given joint but requires training and more time.
