The heaviest load that can be lifted once with good form through a full range — the criterion measure of dynamic muscular strength, found by a structured warm-up-and-build protocol.
Detail
The one-repetition maximum (1RM) is the gold-standard field measure of maximal dynamic strength for a given exercise (commonly back squat, bench press, deadlift, leg press). It requires sound technique, a thorough warm-up, and (for free weights) competent spotting (Spotting Requirements).
NSCA 1RM protocol:
- Warm up with light cardio, then 5–10 reps at ~40–60% of estimated 1RM.
- Rest ~1 min; light dynamic prep.
- 3–5 reps at ~60–80% of estimated 1RM.
- Rest 2–4 min. Add load to a weight thought to allow ~1 rep:
- upper body +5–10% / +10–20 lb, lower body +10–20% / +30–40 lb.
- Attempt 1 rep. If successful, rest 2–4 min and increase load again; if failed, rest and decrease by the increments above.
- Find the true 1RM ideally within 3–5 attempts to avoid fatigue confounding the result.
Cautions: maximal loading is contraindicated for many beginners, novices with poor technique, and certain populations; estimated 1RM from submaximal reps is often safer (Estimated 1RM from Submaximal Reps). Keep technique strict — partial reps inflate the number (ROM Is Not How Far the Weight Moves). Test the same exercise/equipment for valid re-tests.
Key facts
- 1RM = max load for 1 rep with full ROM and good form (dynamic strength criterion).
- Protocol: 5–10 reps @40–60% → 3–5 @60–80% → singles, building by upper +5–10% / lower +10–20%.
- Establish true 1RM within 3–5 attempts; rest 2–4 min between maximal attempts.
- Free-weight tests require spotting; not appropriate for untrained/high-risk lifters → use estimated 1RM.
Connections
- Estimated 1RM from Submaximal Reps — submaximal alternative when maxing is unsafe.
- %1RM ↔ Repetitions Relationship Table — %1RM ↔ reps relationship.
- Repetition Maximum (RM) / Intensity — how 1RM drives load prescription.
- Spotting Requirements / RM-Loading Caution (Hamstring Curl & Stiff-Leg Deadlift) — safety for maximal lifts.
