Bracing is the co-contraction of the entire abdominal wall and trunk musculature (the rectus, both obliques, transverse abdominis, and the spinal extensors) together, producing 360° stiffness around the spine and raising intra-abdominal pressure. The cue is "brace as if about to be punched in the stomach" or "make the waist wide and hard." Bracing keeps the spine in a controlled neutral position (see spine-positioning) under load and is the foundation for core stability (core-stability-vs-strength) and all anti-movement work (anti-movement-concepts).

Hollowing (the "draw-in" maneuver) is a contrasting technique that emphasizes selectively pulling the navel toward the spine to preferentially activate the deep transverse-abdominis. Hollowing arose from motor-control rehabilitation research; it can be useful for teaching deep-muscle activation and in some clinical settings.

Current consensus for performance and heavy loading favors bracing over hollowing, because co-contracting the whole wall produces greater spinal stiffness and stability than isolating one deep muscle. Hollowing alone may not provide enough stability under significant load.
