Core strength is how much force the trunk muscles can produce; core stability is the trunk's ability to resist unwanted motion and keep the spine controlled — and for back health and force transfer, stability usually matters more.
The "core" is the muscular cylinder around the trunk — the deep stabilizers (transverse-abdominis, multifidus, diaphragm, pelvic floor) and the larger movers (rectus-abdominis, the obliques external-oblique/internal-oblique, and erector-spinae).
The distinction matters because most athletic and daily tasks ask the core to stabilize while the limbs move (carrying, pushing, throwing, single-leg stance), not to flex the spine repeatedly. Spine-health research (notably Stuart McGill's work) emphasizes building stability and muscular endurance through anti-movement training — resisting flexion, extension, lateral flexion, and rotation (see anti-movement-concepts) — while limiting high-volume repeated spinal flexion, which can be a risk factor for disc problems (see spine-positioning, back-disorders-causes).
This is why the staple core-stability drills are isometric or anti-motion: the plank family (exercise-plank), bird-dog (exercise-bird-dog), dead bug (exercise-dead-bug), and the Pallof press (exercise-pallof-press) — and why bracing (bracing) is the foundational skill.
