Train the core by resisting motion the limbs or a load try to impose — anti-extension, anti-rotation, and anti-lateral-flexion — rather than by repeatedly flexing the spine.
Anti-movement training operationalizes core stability (see core-stability-vs-strength): instead of producing trunk motion (like a crunch), the trainee resists an external or self-generated tendency to move the spine, holding a braced neutral position (see bracing, spine-positioning). The three categories map to the planes the spine must control:
(A fourth, anti-flexion, is trained by the posterior chain — e.g., deadlifts and back extensions — resisting forward bending under load; see deadlift, back-extension.)
Rationale: real tasks (carrying a bag on one side, pushing a door, throwing, single-leg stance) demand the trunk hold position while forces act on it. Anti-movement training also limits high-volume repeated spinal flexion, which spine-health research links to disc stress (see back-disorders-causes). Progress these drills by increasing the lever (longer limb position), load, time under tension, or instability — never by losing the braced neutral spine.
