Anti-movement training operationalizes core stability (see core-stability-vs-strength): instead of producing trunk motion (like a crunch), the trainee resists an external or self-generated tendency to move the spine, holding a braced neutral position (see bracing, spine-positioning). The three categories map to the planes the spine must control:

  • Anti-extension — resisting the lumbar spine arching/extending. The limbs or load try to pull you into extension; you keep the ribs down and pelvis neutral. Examples: front plank (exercise-plank), dead bug (exercise-dead-bug), ab-wheel rollout, body-saw.
  • Anti-lateral-flexion — resisting side-bending of the spine. Examples: side plank (exercise-side-plank), suitcase carry / single-side loaded carry.
  • Anti-rotation — resisting twisting of the trunk. Examples: Pallof press (exercise-pallof-press), bird-dog (exercise-bird-dog resists rotation as the contralateral limbs extend), single-arm presses and carries.

(A fourth, anti-flexion, is trained by the posterior chain — e.g., deadlifts and back extensions — resisting forward bending under load; see deadlift, back-extension.)

Rationale: real tasks (carrying a bag on one side, pushing a door, throwing, single-leg stance) demand the trunk hold position while forces act on it. Progress these drills by increasing the lever (longer limb position), load, time under tension, or instability — never by losing the braced neutral spine.
