Closing the eyes removes a major balance input, forcing reliance on proprioception and the vestibular system — a simple, equipment-free way to make any balance position substantially harder.
Because vision contributes heavily to postural information (see visual-system-balance), performing a balance task with the eyes closed forces the nervous system to reweight toward the somatosensory (proprioceptive) and vestibular systems (see sensory-reweighting, proprioception). This is a powerful, free progression: nearly any static balance position can be made markedly harder simply by closing the eyes.
How to use it:
This manipulation is also the basis of the clinical Romberg test (standing feet-together, eyes closed) and its variants, used to screen for proprioceptive/vestibular contributions to imbalance. A large increase in sway when the eyes close points to over-reliance on vision and reduced proprioceptive/vestibular function — common in older adults and a relevant fall-risk consideration (see fall-prevention-overview, fall-risk-factors).
