Because vision contributes heavily to postural information (see visual-system-balance), performing a balance task with the eyes closed forces the nervous system to reweight toward the somatosensory (proprioceptive) and vestibular systems (see sensory-reweighting, proprioception). This is a powerful, free progression: nearly any static balance position can be made markedly harder simply by closing the eyes.

How to use it:

  • First master a position with eyes open and steady (e.g., single-leg stance; see exercise-single-leg-stand).
  • Then repeat the same position with eyes closed, near support, expecting much more sway initially.
  • Apply across the base-of-support staircase: feet together → tandem → single-leg, each first eyes-open then eyes-closed.
  • Combine with an unstable surface (eyes closed on foam) only for advanced trainees — this removes two reliable inputs at once and is a genuine fall risk.

This manipulation is also the basis of the clinical Romberg test (standing feet-together, eyes closed) and its variants, used to screen for proprioceptive/vestibular contributions to imbalance.
