The nervous system's trick of trusting whichever balance senses are currently reliable and down-weighting the rest — the principle that makes balance progressions work.
The brain does not weight its three balance inputs equally or constantly. It continuously reweights them, leaning on whichever of the somatosensory, vestibular, and visual systems is providing the most reliable information for the present conditions, and down-weighting any input that is unreliable or conflicting.
Examples:
This adaptability is the mechanism that balance training exploits. Each progression step (eyes closed, narrower base, unstable surface, head turns, dual tasks) deliberately removes or corrupts one input so the others must compensate, driving improvement in the under-trained systems. Combining manipulations (e.g., eyes closed on a balance pad) removes two reliable inputs at once and is therefore much harder — useful for advanced trainees but a fall hazard if introduced too early.
