Standing or moving on a compliant or tilting surface makes foot/ankle proprioceptive input unreliable, ramping up the balance and ankle-stabilizer demand — valuable for balance and rehab, but a poor place to chase maximal strength.
Unstable-surface training places the trainee on a compliant (foam, balance pad) or movable (BOSU, wobble/rocker board, balance disc, stability ball) surface so that the support is no longer firm. This degrades the reliability of plantar/somatosensory input (see somatosensory-system), forcing greater contribution from vestibular and visual systems (see sensory-reweighting) and increasing the activity of the ankle and hip stabilizers and the trunk.
