Detail

Stand on the dome of a BOSU ("both sides up") with feet about hip-to-shoulder width, find a stable base, brace the trunk, and perform a controlled bodyweight squat: hips back and down, knees tracking over the toes (see knee-toe-relationship), chest up, then stand. The unstable dome forces continuous correction by the ankle stabilizers, hips, and core (see unstable-surface-training).

Coaching:

  • Step onto the dome carefully; have support (rail/wall/partner) within reach until confident.
  • Keep depth modest at first; control matters more than range on an unstable surface.
  • Dome-up is the standard, moderate-challenge setup; platform-up (flat side up) is markedly harder and more advanced (see balance-tools).

Important: unstable surfaces reduce the load you can safely use and your force output, so the BOSU squat is for balance/proprioception and stabilizer activation — not for building maximal lower-body strength. Heavy squats belong on stable ground (back-squat).

Progressions (see balance-training-progression): dome-up bodyweight squat → add reaches or an overhead reach → single-leg work on the dome → platform-up. Regression: squat beside the BOSU with one hand on it, or squat to a box on firm ground.
