During endurance exercise, breathe rhythmically to demand; during resistance training, exhale on exertion and avoid breath-holding strain — never hold your breath under heavy load.
Endurance/cardio. Breathing rises with metabolic demand. Nasal or oronasal breathing suffices at low-moderate intensity (nasal-breathing); at higher intensity the body recruits the mouth to meet ventilation needs. Rhythmic breathing (e.g., pairing breaths to a stride or stroke cadence) keeps breathing efficient (cardiorespiratory-guidelines).
Resistance training. The general rule is to exhale during the exertion (concentric/hardest) phase and inhale during the easier phase. Critically, do not hold the breath against a closed glottis under heavy load: sustained breath-holding produces a Valsalva effect that spikes blood pressure and reduces blood flow to the heart, risking fainting (breathing-valsalva). A controlled "brace" (a partial breath held briefly with a stiff trunk) is used by some experienced lifters at maximal loads, but this is distinct from prolonged uncontrolled breath-holding and carries blood-pressure risk for many people.
Core/Pilates link. Coordinated exhale with trunk engagement ("centering") supports the spine during effort (pilates-powerhouse).
