"Recomp" is gaining muscle and losing fat at the same time — most achievable for beginners, returnees, and higher-body-fat individuals with high protein and training.
Body recomposition ("recomp") means simultaneously gaining muscle and losing fat, so body weight may change little while body composition improves. It runs counter to the simple "surplus to gain, deficit to lose" framing, and it is possible — but most pronounced in specific situations:
For these groups, training at maintenance calories or a slight deficit with high protein (~1.6–2.2 g/kg, often higher) and progressive resistance training can add muscle while shedding fat (see muscle-hypertrophy, protein). For lean, well-trained individuals, simultaneous recomp is slow and limited — they generally make faster progress alternating dedicated gaining (bulk) and fat-loss (cut) phases (see bulking, cutting).
Because the scale may barely move, track recomp with other measures: progress photos, girth/circumference measurements, strength gains, and how clothes fit — not body weight alone. Patience is essential; recomposition is gradual.
