Chronically eating too little for one's training load harms hormones, bone, and performance — the syndrome called RED-S (formerly the Female Athlete Triad).
Energy availability (EA) is the dietary energy left for the body's basic functions after exercise energy expenditure is subtracted, expressed per kg of fat-free mass. When EA is chronically too low — from underfueling, excessive training, or disordered eating — physiology suffers even if body weight seems acceptable.
The clinical picture, originally described in women as the Female Athlete Triad (low energy availability, menstrual dysfunction, and low bone density), is now recognized more broadly in all athletes as Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S). Consequences extend beyond the triad to impaired metabolic rate, immunity, protein synthesis, cardiovascular and psychological health, and degraded performance rather than improved leanness.
This matters for the knowledge base because aggressive dieting (see safe-deficit-rate) and high training loads can tip athletes — especially female and endurance athletes — into low EA and associated micronutrient problems (iron, calcium, vitamin D — see micronutrient-deficiency-risk). Warning signs include loss of menstrual periods, frequent illness or injury, stalled or declining performance, poor recovery, and persistent fatigue. The remedy is to increase energy intake and/or reduce training, often with professional support. Fat-loss phases should be moderate, time-limited, and protein-adequate to avoid crossing into harmful underfueling.
