Detail

FITT-VP is the organizing checklist behind a complete exercise prescription. Originally FITT (Frequency, Intensity, Time, Type), ACSM extends it with Volume and Progression so the dose over time is also specified.

  • Frequency — sessions per week (or per muscle group / per fitness component). Governed by frequency for resistance work; ACSM aerobic targets are ≥5 d/wk moderate, ≥3 d/wk vigorous, or 3–5 d/wk combined.
  • Intensity — how hard each effort is: %1RM or RM zone for resistance (intensity); %HRR/%VO2R/%HRmax/RPE for cardio.
  • Time — duration of each session or bout (workout-length).
  • Type — the mode/exercise selection that matches the goal (resistance, aerobic, flexibility, neuromotor).
  • Volume — total dose = frequency × intensity × time (weekly sets per muscle for resistance; minutes or MET-min/week for cardio). See volume.
  • Progression — how the prescription advances: how and when to add load, sessions, or duration (see progressive-overload-application).

FITT-VP is component-agnostic: the same six slots are filled differently for resistance, aerobic, flexibility, and neuromotor training, which is why it is the natural backbone for distributing all four across a week (see weekly-structure-overview). It maps cleanly onto the acute resistance variables — F = frequency, I = intensity, T = time/rest-and-tempo, Type = exercise selection — and adds the two that make a program rather than a workout: Volume (the weekly accumulation) and Progression (the change over time).
