A useful goal is SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. "Get fit" is not programmable; "add 10 kg to my 5-rep back-squat in 12 weeks" is — it names the test, the magnitude, and the deadline, which together fix intensity, volume, and cycle length.

Practically, separate goals into a hierarchy:
