A program is a hypothesis; monitoring tests it. Step 7 of the design process collects data and feeds the next cycle.

What to track (see body-metrics-overview):

  • Performance — loads × reps × sets (training volume and estimated 1RM trend), times/paces/distances for cardio, the goal metric on re-test.
  • Body metrics — bodyweight trend, girths/photos for body-composition goals.
  • Recovery / readiness — soreness, sleep, resting HR / HRV, session RPE, motivation (see readiness-recovery-scores).

Signs the program IS working: performance trending up over weeks (allowing for noise), recovery holding, adherence high, the goal metric moving on re-test.

Signs it is NOT working: the goal metric flat or declining across a mesocycle despite effort; rising RPE at the same loads; mounting fatigue, soreness, poor sleep, or lost motivation; or, conversely, sessions feeling trivially easy (under-dosed).

When and how to change: don't chase noise — judge over weeks, not single sessions. Then in order: if fatigue-driven, deload; if under-recovery/adherence, fix inputs; if truly stalled with good inputs, change a variable (managing-plateaus) or progress the periodization; if the plan no longer matches the goal/training age, redesign from a fresh needs analysis. A working program is changed because progress slowed, not out of boredom — but planned variation is built in precisely so trained lifters don't reach that point prematurely.
