Periodization is the long-term planning layer of programming: the systematic manipulation of volume and intensity (and other variables) across cycles of time to maximize adaptation and minimize overtraining and staleness. It is the structured application of the variation principle and rests on the General Adaptation Syndrome rationale that the body adapts to a stressor, then needs a changed stressor to keep adapting.

All models are organized into nested time units — macro-, meso-, and microcycles — and most build toward a peak for an event. There is no single best model; the choice depends on the goal, the training age, the number of qualities to develop at once, and the calendar (one peak vs. many competitions). Periodization mainly benefits intermediate and advanced trainees; novices progress on simpler linear loading without needing structured cycling.
