Stretching exercises should not be considered a panacea (Alter, 1996). For some athletes, stretching may actually increase the likelihood of ligament injury and joint separation or dislocation; the basis of this claim is that excessively loose joints may lead to premature osteoarthritis.

Do not stretch if: a. a bone blocks motion b. you have had a recent fracture of a bone c. an acute inflammatory or infectious process in or around a joint is suspected or known d. osteoporosis is suspected or known e. there is a sharp, acute pain with joint movement or muscle elongation f. you suffer from certain vascular or skin disease

An individual can also have too much ROM: injury can result from excessive tissue elongation because of a loss of joint integrity (too little joint stability). Loose-jointed individuals should rely on a comprehensive muscle-strengthening program and consider reducing flexibility exercise to maintain joint integrity, since muscular strength adds to joint stability.
