Static stretching involves holding a position: you stretch to the farthest point and hold the position. Splits are a good example of static stretching. The most important advantage of static stretching is that it is the safest of the stretching techniques. Other advantages include:

  • It requires the least expenditure of energy.
  • It allows adequate time to reset the sensitivity of the stretch reflex (see stretch-reflex-resetting).
  • It permits semi-permanent change in length (see fascial-sheath-length-change).
  • It can induce muscular relaxation via the firing of the GTOs (Golgi tendon organs) if the stretch is held long enough (see golgi-tendon-organ).

Static stretching is one of the five basic stretching techniques (static, ballistic, passive, active, proprioceptive). The program standards specify that all stretches are static in nature (flexibility-guidelines-program-standards).
