A warm-up raises muscle temperature, increases blood flow and elasticity, and reduces the risk of injury — stretch only after warming up; stretching a cold muscle can be dangerous.
The purpose of an (aerobic, general) warm-up is to increase circulation to the major muscle groups: it elevates muscle temperature, increases blood flow, and reduces the risk of injury. The warm-up should last 5 to 10 minutes and should elevate the heart rate 20 to 30 beats above the resting rate. Stretching should be done after the warm-up — attempting to stretch a cold muscle can be dangerous to the surrounding soft tissue. No matter how controlled the movement, forcing a muscle through a full normal ROM (and beyond) without appropriately warming it up is both unsafe and counterproductive.
As muscles become warmer, muscle elasticity increases, which may make them less susceptible to pulls and tears; flexibility appears to increase as temperature rises, which is why stretching is more effective after a warm-up. A warm-up may help prevent injuries such as muscle pulls and shin splints. Among flexibility outcomes, regular flexibility exercise is generally believed to reduce both the frequency and severity of injuries.
