How to do the Leg Press Calf Raise

Cues reviewed by Kwabena Osei on

Setup

In the leg press machine, legs extended (not locked out), balls of your feet on the bottom edge of the platform, heels hanging off.

  1. Push through the balls of your feet to press the platform away, then let your heels drop back for a full stretch.

  2. Keep your knees in a fixed, slightly bent position throughout -- this isolates the ankle/calf movement instead of turning it into a leg press.

Common mistakes

  • Letting the knees bend and extend to help move the weight, which turns this into a partial leg press instead of a calf-isolation exercise.

  • Locking the knees out, which is unsafe under load and shifts stress onto the joint.
