How to do the Standing Calf Raise

Cues reviewed by Kwabena Osei on

Setup

Balls of your feet on the platform, knees straight or nearly so -- a bent knee takes the gastrocnemius (the muscle this exercise targets) out of the movement almost entirely.

  1. Lower your heels down for a full stretch, then rise up onto your toes as high as possible.

  2. Don't bend your knees to help drive the movement, and don't lock your knees out hard at the top.

  3. Try "toes in" or "toes out" foot positions on different sets to shift emphasis between the two heads of the calf.

Common mistakes

  • Bending the knees on the way up to cheat more weight through -- this shifts work away from the gastrocnemius, the muscle you're trying to train.

  • Using short, bouncy partial reps instead of a full stretch-to-full-contraction range.

How the knowledge graph models this movement

Each joint action, with the role and emphasis the graph assigns each muscle. These are qualitative anatomical labels, not measured muscle activation.

  • Ankle plantarflexionprimary action

Gastrocnemius (prime mover, high emphasis); Soleus (synergist, moderate emphasis); Fibularis longus (synergist, low emphasis); Tibialis anterior (stabilizer, low emphasis)
