Horizontal Pull exercises

Row a load toward the torso — mid-back and lats.

16 exercises in the knowledge graph, ordered beginner to advanced.

What the horizontal pull pattern is

Shoulder extension / horizontal abduction plus elbow flexion — pulling a load horizontally toward the trunk, as in a row.

Why it matters

The horizontal pull builds the mid-back — lats, rhomboids, mid-traps, and rear delts — balancing all the pressing volume and protecting healthy, retracted shoulder posture.

Coaching cues

  • Lead with the elbow; pull to the lower ribs.
  • Retract the shoulder blade at the top — squeeze.
  • Keep the torso still; don’t heave with the lower back.
  • Control the lowering phase fully.

Common faults

  • Using momentum / torso swing to move the load.
  • Shrugging the shoulders up instead of pulling back.
  • Cutting the range — not reaching full retraction.
  • Rounding the back in the bent-over position.
  • Spine losing its stable "S"-shape and rounding into a "C" as the weight gets pulled in.
  • Elbow drifting off a consistent pulling line instead of tracking the same path every rep.
