How to do the Trunk Twist

Cues reviewed by Kwabena Osei on

Setup

Seated in a rotary-torso machine with your hips locked in place by the machine's pads.

  1. Rotate your torso against the machine's resistance, keeping your hips fixed -- this is a machine-only movement; a loaded standing twist with a free bar is not a substitute and carries real knee and spine injury risk.

  2. Expect a real rotation range of roughly 40 degrees each way -- lumbar rotation is naturally limited, so don't force past a comfortable range.

  3. Return under control to the starting position.

Common mistakes

  • Using a free bar or barbell across the shoulders for a standing version of this movement -- that loaded, momentum-driven version is a known injury risk to the knees and spine, not a valid alternative to the machine.

  • Rushing the rotation instead of a slow, controlled turn each way.

How the knowledge graph models this movement

Each joint action, with the role and emphasis the graph assigns each muscle. These are qualitative anatomical labels, not measured muscle activation.
