Since the trochlea extends longer than the capitulum, the axis for flexion and extension of the elbow is not fully perpendicular to the shaft of the humerus. Because of this, during elbow extension (with the forearm supinated) the forearm deviates laterally in relation to the humerus, which accounts for the carrying angle (also known as the cubital angle). The average angle is 5 degrees in men and 10 to 15 degrees in women. A source note explains this angle "is used to carry things." In arm training, the barbell is gripped at "carrying angle" width, and rope triceps work is done at "elbows carrying angle width." With dumbbells, you do not have to worry about the carrying angle.
