Detail

Neuromotor exercise (balance, agility, coordination, gait, mobility) is dosed at 2–3 days/week, ~20–30 min/day (see neuromotor-acsm-recommendation). Because it trains motor control and skill (see motor-control), it is best performed when the nervous system is fresh and unfatigued — fatigue degrades coordination, increases sway, and raises injury/fall risk during challenging balance work.

Placement within a session:

  • Warm-up: dynamic mobility drills and CARs prepare joints and prime movement quality (see dynamic-warmup-overview, controlled-articular-rotations); light balance activation can also go here.
  • Early in the main session (post-warm-up, pre-fatigue): the most challenging balance, perturbation, and complex coordination work — placed before heavy strength or hard conditioning so skill is practiced fresh (analogous to placing power/skill before fatigue; see exercise-order).
  • Core stability: anti-movement core drills (plank family, Pallof, dead bug, bird-dog) can sit early as activation or be appended after main lifts; they are low-fatigue and pair well as supersets.
  • Cool-down: gentle balance holds or mobility flows are fine, but avoid demanding balance work when fatigued.

Integration with the rest of the program:

  • Balance/mobility can be woven into existing strength and cardio days (no need for separate sessions), e.g., single-leg drills between sets, mobility in warm-ups, a tandem-walk finisher.
  • It is low systemic fatigue, so it rarely conflicts with recovery and can be done frequently.
  • For older adults and fall-prevention goals, balance work should appear most days in some form (see fall-prevention-overview, weekly-structure-overview).
