Concurrent training is performing both endurance (cardio) and resistance training within the same program. The interference effect, first described by Robert Hickson in 1980, is the observation that strength development can be attenuated when endurance and strength training are combined, relative to strength training done in isolation.

What the evidence shows:

  • Most studies confirm that gains in maximal strength, power, and muscle hypertrophy tend to be attenuated by concurrent training, though not in every study. Endurance adaptations (e.g., VO2max) are generally not impaired by adding strength work — the interference is largely one-directional (cardio blunting strength/power more than the reverse).
  • The magnitude is often modest, and more recent reviews suggest it is less severe than once feared, especially for general fitness goals as opposed to elite strength/power.
  • Power and high-velocity strength appear most vulnerable; submaximal endurance and hypertrophy less so.

  • Endurance modality and impact: cycling tends to interfere less than running (less eccentric muscle damage to the trained muscles).
  • Volume and intensity of the endurance work: higher endurance volume/intensity and frequency increase interference; keeping cardio moderate helps.
