In one line

The basic barbell (or cable) biceps curl — the major-muscle-balance biceps exercise in the FSU strength-conditioning program.

Detail

The fundamental biceps curl, performed with a barbell (also EZ-curl bars) or cable crossover. Listed as the major-muscle-group biceps exercise (with dumbbell alternate curls) for muscle balance. Grip the barbell at "carrying angle" width. The biceps brachii is a 2-joint muscle with an elbow ROM of 135 degrees; it performs a stabilizing action at the shoulder while movement occurs at the elbow. Elevating the upper arm at the end of the motion does NOT provide maximal contraction. The EZ-curl bar does not work the biceps maximally — a straight bar puts more emphasis on the biceps.

Key facts

  • Primary: Short Head, Long Head; Secondary: Brachialis, Brachioradialis.
  • Biceps brachii ROM at the elbow: 135 degrees (2-joint muscle).
  • Grip at carrying-angle width.
  • EZ-curl bar does not maximally work the biceps; straight bar is better.

Connections

  • biceps-brachii — primary mover (and shoulder stabilizer).
  • brachialis / brachioradialis — secondary elbow flexors.
  • carrying-angle — grip-width consideration.
  • standing-barbell-curl — the standing strict/cheat variation.
