Specialty barbells alter the standard straight-bar geometry to serve a specific purpose —
usually to reduce joint stress, change the line of pull, or accommodate an injury or
limitation.
- Trap / hex bar. A hexagonal frame you stand inside, with neutral (parallel) handles. The
load sits in line with your center of mass, so the trap-bar deadlift is more upright and
places less shear stress on the lumbar spine than a straight-bar deadlift — friendlier
for beginners and those protecting the low back (see spine-positioning). Many bars
have high and low handle options.
- Safety-squat bar (SSB). A cambered bar with padded shoulder yoke and forward handles. It
shifts load slightly forward, lets you squat without externally rotating the shoulders
(good for shoulder/elbow issues), and increases trunk-extension demand.
- EZ-curl bar. A short bar with zig-zag bends that put the wrists in a semi-supinated
angle, reducing wrist/elbow strain in curls and triceps extensions.
- Cambered bar. Bent so the weight hangs below the bar, adding instability/stretch (e.g.,
cambered-bar bench, good-mornings).
- Swiss / football / multi-grip bar. Multiple neutral-grip handles for pressing and rows;
easier on the shoulders.
- Other: the buffalo/curl-back bar (slight bend for squats/presses), the deadlift
bar (longer, more whip), and the power bar (stiff, for maximal lifts).
These tools are about fit and stress management, not novelty — choose the one whose load
path matches the joint you need to spare.
