The classic model in which volume starts high and intensity low, then volume gradually falls as intensity rises across the macrocycle toward a strength/power peak.
Linear (or "traditional") periodization is the original model formalized in the Stone et al. framework documented at periodization. Across a macrocycle it moves through sequential phases in which volume decreases as intensity increases, exploiting the inverse volume–intensity relationship:

The trend is monotonic over the whole cycle — each phase is "more intense, less voluminous" than the last (see the rm-continuum for the rep→quality mapping). This is the easiest model to program and works very well for beginners and for athletes building toward a single, dated peak.
Strengths: simple to plan and progress; technique-friendly; ideal for one peak. Limitations: the qualities trained early (e.g., hypertrophy, endurance) can detrain by the end of a long cycle because they are no longer stimulated; it suits a single peak poorly when many competitions are spread across a season. For trained lifters who need to maintain several qualities at once, undulating or block models often outperform it.
