Detail

A training program is the structured layer that sits between a person's goal and the individual workouts they perform. Where a single session is just a list of exercises for one day, a program decides which sessions happen, in what order, at what dose, and how that dose changes across weeks and months so that the body is reliably pushed to adapt.

A program is distinct from three things it is often confused with:

  • A workout is one session. A program is the schedule of many workouts over time.
  • A routine is a fixed sequence of exercises. A program adds intentional change (progression and variation) on top of that sequence.
  • A goal is the desired outcome (e.g., "add 20 kg to my squat", "run a 5K"). A program is the engineered route to that goal.

Every coherent program embeds the core training principles: specificity (the work resembles the goal), progressive overload (the demand rises over time), progression (the rate of increase is managed), variation (the stimulus changes to avoid stagnation), and individuality (the plan is fitted to the person). A program that ignores any of these tends to stall, bore, or injure the trainee.

The smallest unit a program manipulates is the set of acute variables — exercise selection, exercise order, load/intensity, sets, reps, rest, tempo, and frequency (see resistance-training-variables-table). The program-design process (see program-design-process) is the repeatable method for choosing those variables for a specific goal and person, and the FITT-VP framework (see fitt-vp-framework) is the checklist that ensures none are forgotten.
