The terms are often conflated, but the BALANCE domain draws a deliberate distinction from the flexibility domain:

  • Flexibility is the available range of motion at a joint or joints, typically assessed and developed passively — an external force (gravity, a partner, your other hand) takes the joint toward end range while the target muscles relax (see passive-stretching, range-of-motion). It is largely about tissue extensibility.
  • Mobility is the ability to actively move a joint through a range with control and strength. Mobility = passive range that you can produce and govern with your own muscles and motor control. It therefore combines flexibility, strength through range, and coordination (see motor-control).

A useful illustration: someone may have the passive flexibility to be moved into a deep squat or a high leg raise, yet lack the active mobility to get there and control it under their own power. The gap between passive and active range is exactly the territory mobility training addresses.
