How to do the Barbell Shrug

Cues reviewed by Kwabena Osei on

Setup

Stand holding a barbell in front of your thighs, arms straight, shoulders relaxed down to start.

  1. Elevate your shoulders straight up toward your ears, squeezing at the top.

  2. Keep the movement purely vertical -- don't roll your shoulders forward or backward.

  3. Lower under control back to a full stretch, letting your shoulders relax down fully between reps.

Common mistakes

  • Rolling the shoulders in a circular motion instead of moving straight up and down -- this doesn't train the trapezius any better and adds unnecessary shoulder-joint stress.

  • Using momentum/a quick bounce at the bottom instead of a controlled stretch and a controlled elevation.
