How to do the Kettlebell Clean and Press

Cues reviewed by Kwabena Osei on

Setup

Stand with the kettlebell between your feet, hips hinged back slightly.

  1. Perform the clean (drive your hips to bring the bell into the rack position at your shoulder), catching it softly with your elbow tucked in.

  2. From the rack position, press the bell straight overhead by extending your arm, keeping your core braced and avoiding leaning back to help drive the weight up.

  3. Lower back to the rack position under control, then lower the bell back to the start or continue for reps.

Common mistakes

  • Leaning back or arching the lower back to press the weight up instead of pressing in a straight vertical line with a braced core.

  • Rushing the clean into the press without stabilizing in the rack position first.
