Maximal strength is mostly a neural adaptation (recruitment, rate coding, intermuscular coordination), so the prescription is high load, low reps, full recovery, high practice frequency on a few key lifts.

Acute variables:

  • Reps: 1–6 (strength end of the rm-continuum); most working sets at 3–5, with regular heavier singles/doubles for peaking.
  • Intensity: ~80–95%+ 1RM (see intensity); set via percentages off a tested or estimated 1RM (one-rep-max-test), or by RPE.
  • Sets: ~3–6 working sets per main lift.
  • Rest: ~3–5 min between heavy sets — full recovery is required to express force (rest-between-sets).
